As Professor of Saxophone at the USC Thornton School of Music, I believe that technical preparation and musical expression are inseparable.

My teaching emphasizes the development of sound, technique, phrasing, and stylistic understanding. Through disciplined practice and thoughtful preparation, students develop the confidence to move beyond the mechanics of playing and communicate musically.

Whether preparing orchestral repertoire, chamber music, a solo performance, or a professional recording session, the goal remains the same: to develop the skills, awareness, and confidence to become a complete musician.

The USC Thornton Saxophone Studio

The USC Thornton Saxophone Studio is dedicated to developing thoughtful, versatile, and expressive musicians. Students are encouraged to establish a strong technical foundation, develop their individual sound, and approach every performance with musical intention.

Through individual instruction, studio classes, masterclasses, and ensemble performance, students explore the full range of classical saxophone repertoire while developing the skills necessary for professional performance. Emphasis is placed on sound production, technique, phrasing, stylistic understanding, sight-reading, and the ability to move confidently from the practice room to the concert stage.

Chamber music is an essential part of the studio experience. Students collaborate in saxophone duos, trios, quartets, quintets, and larger ensembles, developing the listening, communication, and leadership skills that are fundamental to successful ensemble playing.

Beyond learning repertoire, students are challenged to become independent musicians who can identify problems, practice efficiently, make informed musical decisions, and adapt to different performance situations.

The goal is not simply to prepare students for their next lesson, recital, or audition. It is to help them develop the artistry, discipline, confidence, and professional awareness necessary for a lifetime in music.
